Personalised learning

The Every Child Matters: Change for Children programme is focused on giving every child the support they require, whatever their needs, abilities, background or circumstances. As such these outcomes tie in closely with the emerging emphasis on personalised learning which is a key aspect of the new relationship with schools.

Schools already support all five Every Child Matters outcomes and this will be reflected in new school inspection criteria:

  • Keeping children safe from bullying, harassment and discrimination
  • Encouraging children to develop healthy and active lifestyles
  • Ensuring each pupil progresses as well as they possibly can
  • Ensuring that pupils attend school regularly, giving them a strong voice in the life of the school and encouraging them to volunteer to help others
  • Helping all to value education and to appreciate that it is the key to success in later life

Schools will want to work together with local children's trusts to ensure that all children in their local area are being supported to meet the five outcomes, to feed in their views about how services can best be provided, and to discuss the role they might play, singly or in clusters or partnerships, in providing them.

A personalised approach to supporting children means:

  • Tailoring learning to the needs, interests and aspirations of each individual
  • Tackling barriers to learning and allowing each child to achieve their potential

High educational standards and well-being go hand in hand. Pupils can't learn and thrive if they don't feel safe, or if health problems are allowed to create barriers. Conversely, doing well in education is the most effective route out of poverty and disaffection. Early intervention is the most effective way to deal with difficulties before they escalate.
