Missing children notifications
When there are outstanding concerns about children's safety, local agencies and professionals should bear in mind that a series of missed appointments may indicate that a family has moved out of the area or overseas. The same regard should be paid to the welfare of unborn children. Children's social care and the police should be notified immediately when such concerns arise.
In the case of children taken overseas it may be appropriate to contact the Consular Directorate at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office which offers assistance to British nationals in distress overseas. They may be able to follow up a case through their consular posts in the country concerned.
To contact the Consular Directorate go to the Foreign Office website or call 020 7008 1500.
List of designated managers
The Department for Children, Schools and Families holds a list of all the designated managers in local authorities in England who are responsible for ensuring that notifications are dealt with properly.
[This is referred to in paragraph 5.144-8 of Working Together to Safeguard Children (2006).]
The list includes Custodians of Child Protection Registers for those areas that still have separate registers, and designated managers in other areas.
[The role of designated managers is described in paragraph 5.151 of Working Together.]
The list of designated managers can be used to notify local authorities about children who have gone missing from their local authority area.
Please send any amendments to the details on the list to info@dcsf.gsi.gov.uk
In addition, we would be grateful if you could ensure that you copy all notifications of missing children to the 'Head of the Child Protection Helpline' at the NSPCC and the 'Head of the National Missing Persons Helpline' so that they can inform their teams.
